Celtic manager Neil Lennon has admitted it will be difficult to retain star players like Victor Wanyama when there is interest from bigger clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United.
The Scottish side were knocked out comprehensively in the last 16 of the Champions League by Juventus who hammered them 5-0 on aggregrate. Despite the disappointment at being knocked out, Celtic can take some pride at their performances, especially since they beat Barcelona on home turf to enter the knockout phase.
But, key members of Celtic’s squad are nearing the end of their contracts and manager Lennon believes that it may be difficult to keep hold off them. He said, “It would be a travesty for these young players not to progress their careers having achieved so much in this. Some of them want to progress their careers maybe out of Scotland and it is difficult to stop that progression.”
One such player who is stood out for Celtic is defender Wanyama who has been immense at the back. His contract is up in 2014 and he is yet to sign an extension. The 21-year-old has seen his reputation rise this season and may very well move on in the summer, with The Hoops ready to part with their star defender for around £10 million.
When asked his own future, he said, “I don’t know whether we will all be together next season. I hope so, but no one knows yet. I believe if we stay together, we can get better. We just have to wait and see.”
