Chelsea Eyeing Long-Term United Target

Chelsea have set their eyes on Portugese club Benfica’s defender Ezequiel Garay, who has been tracked by Manchester United for a long time.

The defender has enjoyed an impressive season so far with Benfica, and the former Real Madrid man has attracted interest from Chelsea off late. Chelsea have previously taken a player from Benfica to Stamford Bridge in the form of Brazilian international David Luiz back in January, 2011. The Blues wish to do the same, this time with Garay. Also, recent rumors have been doing the rounds that Benfica could be tempted in selling their defender if an impressive offer comes their way.

Manchester United would be monitoring this situation from close quarters. The Red Devils are known to be long-term admirers of Garay, and even tried to lure him to Old Trafford unsuccessfully previously as he chose to join Benfica instead from Real Madrid. They have been keen to bring in the 26-year old as a long-term replacement of Rio Ferdinand.

With Chelsea looking set to pursue their transfer target, United will have to make a move quickly if they do not wish to lose their target once again. Will we see an interesting battle between the two English giants in the summer?
