Skrtel Nearing Anfield Exit?

Relations between Reds coach Brendan Rodgers and central defender Martin Skrtel have deteriorated with the latter considering his stay at the club.

Skrtel has not started a Premier League game since the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on January 13 and was also criticized by Rodgers after an underwhelming performance against Oldham in the FA Cup. The Slovakian is currently sidelined with a knee injury but admits that he would not likely start even if he was fit and if he remains out of the side till the end of the season, he would look at his alternatives.

He was asked whether he spoke to Rodgers about his sudden omission from the starting eleven and Skrtel said, “We have but it is not ideal. He told me something on this, gave me some explanation, but it’s hard to tell if it was the true reason he gave me. I don’t think it was and think there is something else behind it. Anyway, I’m not the type of player who would be chasing the coach and be in his office all the time, asking for explanations why I’m not playing. I have never done this, I’m not doing it now and I never will be.”

Liverpool are already set to lose Jamie Carragher to retirement at the end of the season and are in the market for at least a couple of central defenders. Even Coates may be allowed to go on loan to get some regular first team football. And Skrtel, who signed a long term contract last summer, may also depart after being linked with a return to Russia.

Skrtel has insisted he will given it consideration at the end of the season and will not make any hasty decisions. He said,” For three years at Liverpool I was playing in almost every match and even in the national team I have played a lot of games. I have had various thoughts but certainly I’m not going to make any hot-blooded decision.”
